Creating a new Domain, in an existing tree --important

Attempting to take an existing domain (fresh out of thebox domain) class.com and DCPROMO my other server into making a Subdomain (fief.class.com)

i keep getting the error ""unsuitable domain controller found, disjoining domain""

I have tried to do this both from a workgroup, as well inside the class.com domain. Also when naming the domain to join, i cannot use the FQDN, only the netbios domain name.

is this a problem with the DNS on my root server class.com?
