Hi,

I have been searching for a solution but I can't find it anywhere, please help!

I need to switch a user to another machine (let's call it machine b) (also win xp pro) while waiting for a new hard drive for the old one.

The user had never logged onto machine b before so there's no profile and I don't have his password to log on and create one. How can I copy all his setting to machine b without having the profile created first (or can I create it without logging on as him?)? I have both local & domain admin right.

I tried creating a folder in the doc and settings dir with the username, but a username.DOMAINNAME folder is created and used instead.

Is this a way to do this?

THANKS.

Start -> Run //computername/c$ and locate his profile. Since you have domain rights you can copy it over to the new computer

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Hi, I have tried that but it didn't work.

When the user logs in, another profile named username.DOMAINNAME is created.

If HD is broken do you even have access to his old profile? and if you are on a domain can't youreset his password? Just curious. When we move users onto new machines we always have to log in first, if not we get the same thing created user.domain

Nadiazipper,

that's the problem, I don't have the user's password to log in first.

I want to know if there's a way around it.

The HD isn't not dead yet. I can still get to the Profile and backed it up.

While I am working on the new HD, the user will be using VPN to work from home so I can't simply reset the password.
