Look into Access User-Level Security. It's quite good. There's a FAQ that tells you pretty much all you need to know, though it's tough reading. It's on the MS site and it's on my site. Rolling your own security is indeed possible, but it's a huge duplication of effort that most around here agree ends up being a waste of time.
