The "Normal" style in my Word 2003 document has 1.5 line spacing. I am trying to create a table style with single line spacing. The new style, with the specified line spacing, does not work. I think it is because that the new table style is based on the "Table Normal" style, which is based on the "Normal" style.

Is there anyway to go around this?

Yes.

When you create a new style you have the choice of what Style to base it on. This is because styles have inheritance, that is, a child style retains characteristics of its parent style.

One of the choices for the dropdown "Style based on:" is....."no style".

As you have found out, often - especially if there has not been consistent and proper use of styles - the default Style based on: is "Normal".

I am using Word 2003, and there is no "No Style" available in the dropdown list.

Ack! Really? In the New Style dialog, in the Style based on: dropdown there is no "(no style)"??? It is at the very top of the list.

If it is not there in 2003, ummmmm, then I have nothing to suggest.

Gerry

No Style" is available if the style type is "Paragraph".
It is not available when the style type is "Table."

Table Styles are a law unto themselves - particularly with regard to inheritance from Normal. Easiest way is to use a different style for everything else (not a bad idea anyway) and set Normal as you want in the Table - alternatively apply a Paragraph Style to the Table over the top of the Table Style (far from ideal, I know).

Enjoy,
Tony

Right, I forgot it was a Table style being talked about.

Tony is right. Table styles are...quirky, at best. Great idea, but they definitely have issues.

Gerry

Thanks.

I think I have to give up on this and apply a Paragraph Style to the Table over the top of the Table Style.
