CRC error

We have a some archives stored in ZIP format on a number of CDs. Unfortunately, one of these archives gets a CRC error when trying to unzip it.
I've tried the disk in a few drives on different computers just to rule out them (I've had CRC errors generated on some drives with different files before).
The files were zipped using either Winzip 6 or 7 (dunno if that makes a difference).

Is there any way to retrieve the files? I've tried unzipping, waiting for the error and then copying the file from the TEMP directory but the file was 'unreadable'. Can CRC errors be fixed?

Regards

Probably don't have access to the machine that originally recorded it...if by chance you do, you might use it to copy the file to the hard drive and trying another disk.

I understand the newest Norton Disc Doctor MIGHT do it...
Unfortunately, in applying the compression algorithm, just a single wrong byte makes the decompression impossible.

One might copy the file to a hard drive and try good ole scandisk on it...prolly REALLY scramble it!

I discovered, too, when I had one that powering on with a disk in the drive just about ensured CRC errors on the data.

CRC Errors usually means the data is screwed up. Did you unzip them in order? They also have that error if you use an obsolete version of pkunzip.

PowerArchiver has a utility that is supposed to repair corrupt files - I have used it in the past and it has worked. Though the version I used was the freeware version.

I did find, however, that it couldn't do anything with corrupt archives that had been password protected originally.

The error I get says something like 'CRC Error (j53f63d)'. Those letters and number aren't the exact ones but you get the idea. I've also tried using the latest version of Winzip to extract them but it had no effect.

I don't have Norton but I'll give Scan disk a try (or in this case Check Disk)

I'll try download Power Archiver and give it a go.

Thanks

I tried both Power Archiver and the DOS utility but neither could fix the problem.

Power Archiver says that it fixed the problem and when I try to extract the file, it says 'CRC Error. Continue?'. When I select Yes, it does nothing.

The DOS utility scans and rebuilds the file but its pretty much the same.

Thanks for utilities anyway...they might come in useful.

Yeah the file is likely hosed. Zip standard is kind of archaic, you should try winrar as it will allow you to add a recovery record which will more easily allow for repair. John D. Saucier
