I know I'm shooting for the stars on this but I am running an NT server with SP6a with Exchange server 5.5, IIS (I don't know the version, whatever comes with NT) and SQL server 7. Every few weeks or so, maybe 3 or 4, the IIS server stops responding. The only way to clear it is to restart the server. There aren't any messages in the Event logs nor can I restart the service because it doesn't respond to the Shutdown command for the Web service. I'm no pro with NT but I can hold my own. Any thought as to what I could try? I hate the fact that I might have to start doing a scheduled restart of the NT servers.

Does IIS write or keep a log-file...???? We recently had a problem with one of our citrix servers stoppping, no error or event was recorded....it turned out to be hardware related to mouse/keyboard....???? Again we looked at memory, page file, registry size, memory leaks etc..etc.. if there's no error to go on its just a case of eliminating one thing at a time....

I would recommend a scheduled reboot though............

Thanks for the reply. I neglected to mention that ONLY IIS stops working. Exchange continues on its merry way as does sqlserver so I wouldn't think hardware in this case. I might just chaulk it up to Microsoft and the need for reboots.

just a quick question, what is the function of the IIS service on that specific server? do you need this service at all?

Jeff, IIS is serving up Exchange webaccess as well as a web based trouble reporting system. So I do need to have it running at all times.

If you are running IIS 2.0 (that came with NT) you might want to consider upgrading to IIS 4.0. 2.0 was a buggy monster as I seem to recall. Just be prepared to patch the heck out of it if you upgrade.

I have a similar problem. A customer of ours is running Small Business Server 4.5 on a Compaq Proliant server with Exchange 5.5, SQL 7 and MS Proxy 2.0, as well as IIS 4.0

The iisadmin service keep crashing without any errors in the event logs. This brings down the and as a result all the proxy services. When these crash, they can be restarted without any problems, but not too long after that they crash again.

The internet connection is a dial-on-demand ISDN, connected to this server. They are also running Norton Anti-Virus software.

I've checked for Code Red with the Norton software available for download on their website. The test was negative. I've reinstalled IIS and Proxy several times, and loaded all the latest service packs for Proxy and NT4. I've tried to disable Norton and all other 3rd party software running on the server, but no luck.

There is also a 4 port modem dial-up card in the server. This card was added recently, and not too long after that they started experiencing these problems. However, I don't think the modem card is the problem. We have exactly the same card in the same type of Compaq Server with basically the same configuration of software running at another customer's site, and they don't have these problems.

Anybody got any ideas?
