CR 8.5 does not export subreport to text

I have a CR written in CR 8.5 that is using a subreport. When exporting the file, I am running into two problems that I need help with:
1. Exporting to Excel gets all the data (other formats do not get the subreport data) but are excruciatingly slow. I mean two records in about ten seconds. VERY slow.
2. Exporting to other formats - I have tried Access databases, and all sorts of text file formats - DO NOT get the subreport data.
What should I be doing to get this right?
