I have a family mmember who has an IBM Aptiva 590. This link gives a brief description:

His system is slow, obviously. Anyway, it comes with an AMD Athlon 550 MHz CPU (Socket A) and I want to upgrade it with an AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz CPU (Socket A) that I've got laying around at my house. I could not find any info on if the motherboard with support the faster CPU. I'm just looking for a "best guess" - do you think it will work?

All great accomplishments were once considered impossible.

If it is a 100FSB Athlon it is likely to work fine. Don't forget to use a decent heatsink/fan combo. Get the RAM up to 256MB.

(the link took me to a Netvista!)

Andy.

Thanks - I'll double check the model of Athlon I'm going to put into the computer in question and verify the FSB speed. Also, the RAM thankfully won't be an issue - he has upgraded it to 447 MB.

Thanks for your help!

Calculated guess!
It all depends on if the board will support 266fsb Athlon CPU's , most socket "A" motherboards do, even many of the earlier ones.
The Thunderbird 1.2 was manufactured in two versions, with 200fsb and 266fsb, you shouldn't have any problems with the first (200) and fitting the second type (with 266fsb) won't have any detrement but if found to be unsupported it will possibly post at a lower clock reading.
Also there is a chance that the bios may need flashing to recognise the faster processor.
