Hi

I have an Athlon 900mhz chip with 512ram and geforce 2 graphics card.

Until xmas in only had a 12Gb hard drive'but just got a new 40 Gb one.

Normally my CPU has a temperature between 39-41 degrees'but now has been running up to about 45 degrees.

Now i have been really installing tons and tons of things today getting as many games and software applications on as possible. So i am wondering if that would be the cause of the Temperature rise and not the new hard drive.I've installed perhaps 20 games in a row and also other applications and the pc is constantly needing to reboot etc.

So i'm asking if you think this is causing the temp rise and should settle down once i stop the installing or wether it's the new hard drive.I am using it in tandem with my old 12GB one so perhaps this may also be causing a problem.

One other question?
What is the recommended safe temp for cpu's?
When does it get unsafe?

Thanx

The additional hard drive will not cause your CPU's temperature to rise.

It will however cause the overall temperature in your case to rise.

Your higher CPU temperature will be a result of it working more than usual.

Have you measured your inside case temperature lately?

Everything that I have seen has said that anything in the 60's is getting pretty unsafe as far as CPU temperature goes. Just about everyone with an Athlon is running in the high 30's or 40's, depending upon their heatsink/fan and overall case temp.

I hope that this helps!

The extra 40 gig is creating HEAT! and WILL raise the air temperature in the case, because this warmed up air is then used to cool the CPU it in turn will also run slightly hotter, for every degree hotter in the case the CPU temp will rise correspondingly.
Next thing, 45c max is really fine! as has been said you will only get stabillity problems into the 60's, and AMD state an absolute max for the 900 T/bird as 90c, so you're way safe! Martin

Try putting an exhaust fan and an intake fan in your casing. A 7200rpm hdd will really add heat to the internal casing. The fans will help circulate the air inside. After placing the fans my temp fell by 4 deg C. Also using 2 hdds will mean more work for your power supply which should at least be 300W. Temp paranoia is normal. As mentioned 45 is safe, but lower is better. You get it lower then you won't have to monitor the temp 24-7. Save on system resources. Greater performance and greater stability.

For that little increase in temperature, a simple slot fan might help your peace of mind. It's cheap, easy to install, and doesn't demand much from your power supply. Just a thought.
