I just got my new computer up and going. My bios hardware monitor shows my cpu running about 43-45 deg. C, the cpu box says optimum 39 deg. It is a 3.2g Pent 4 - not dual core with factory fan installed. I did install heat sink compound to CPU/fan. Should I opt for a better aftermarket fan? I also added a second 120mm case fan for extra airflow.

I plan on using the computer to convert my old vhs home movies to DVD and compile all my Digital Photos as well.

I have 3 HDD's in the system and have been deleting many dulplicate photos.
Many times the search will shut down on me and I am wondering if this is due to the cpu Temp? Is there any way to find out what is hanging this process up?

The CPU temperature is perfectly ok, if anything its on the low side. The Intel P4 can operate up to 69.2 degrees C. Then they start to reduce speed but will not crash the system. Check your memory, and also your power supply. If you use a supply which came with the case it might be marginal as you use 3 drives. Good luck.

If your using the power supply to your case switch it ASAP to a well known brand and one with plenty of amperage on the 12 volt side, since your using 3 hard drives id say at least 20 amps or more. It will be cheap compared to the damage a cheap case power supply can cause. Cheap power supplies when they go out sometimes will take out the entire computer.

If the search is stopping might be time to run chkdsk and defrag.

Another thing ensure the computer isnt full of dust.

My case came with a 500 Watt Ultra V series power supply.
Most of the reviews were good for this PS. Is this not an ok PS for what I have?

The PSU is fine, your temperatures are fine, I really don't know where this optimum 39c comes from.
These are good numbers for this setup.

th55,
"Many times the search will shut down on me"

Are you saying that the search application shuts down or the entire system shuts down?

When you search, are you searching all 3 hard drives?
If so, search again and take note as to which drive is being accessed when the shut down occurs. It may be a hard drive issue.

Yes, I am searching all the drives at the same time and am trying to delete duplicate files. This is when it locks up, if I give it 30 seconds or more it usually will catch up, otherwise I get the (not reponding)error. The system does not shut down just the search window will stop responding sometimes.

My intent was to delete duplicate files at least to a point to where I copy all and burn all pics and movies to a DL DVD.
Now that I gotten the total size of the files to that point neither of my DVD burners will burn to DVD, they both say that there is no Disk in drive or it is full. These are brand new DVD+r DL disks that I have not used at all.
I was thinking there is a format or prepare disk for writing process, but I did not see that in the help section.

How do you check the memory? on boot up and in bios it shows the one GIG that is installed, is there a test other that that on startup?
