My processor is constantly running at 25% or there abouts. Have shut down all unwanted apps throguh CTRL-ALT-DEl. Still the same. Is there a way in 98 to see what is using the CPU up like in NT?

Always used to run at 0% when doing nothing. No apps are running and nothing in tool bar open...Everything in BIOS looks okay and has not been changed.Scanned disk and checked for Viruses using up to dae virus checker.

Run out of ideas to what could be causing this.

Run SpyBot... what you might be missing.
Try running msconfig from Start, Run...uncheck anything unneccessary that's on your Startup tab, restart and check resources again.

Just re-installed 98. Same problem occuring. :(

Sound has gone now also. Cant see any conflicts with IRQ's

Any ideas.

How do you know that the processor is running at 25%??

If you are getting this information from M.$. SYSMON.exe, then the reading may be inaccurate!

There's a nice little app called "Process Explorer"(77KB) that will show processor usage accurately as to how distributed through individual running apps including idle process. This is a bonus in addition to the detailed info it displays in regards to the running apps and also allows you to change priorities.

In regards to the sound, perhaps something went awry in the reinstallation of the OS.

Hope this helps.

Thanks wheedoggy for your post. I can tell that the CPU has 25% approx usage in System monitor. Added graph for system usage. If I run a 3rd party peace of software that updates this very quickly it looks more like it is fluctuating between about 0%-80% (25% looks like the average it gives.)I will give your suggestion a go and see where the usage is allocated. (cannot see this using System Monitor)

Thanks...

Just downloaded software posted by wheedogg. Shows CPU usage fluctuating wildly at idle...Ran defrag again in safe mode and run through full scan disk. Everything seems to be running fine now. CPU usage is okay. Tested again this morning before work and everything is running great. Defrag must have screwed some of the files up:( Is it worth using Disk keeper light on 98 system, heard that this is better than MS defrag.

Any ideas different to defrag causing this would be appreciated...
