CPU meltdown??

Question for you all,
Was running my comp without any case fans, bought it from a shady dealer before I had any idea about anything.

Got on the machine this morning, working fine, about 20 minutes later it goes completley down. This has happened before, not often, and no more recentley than before, but turning off the power switch on the back usally fixes the problem. Not this time.

When I turn the power back on, MB light comes on, so I know I'm getting power to it, and that it is still alive. Try to boot the comp and get nothing, nothing at all. I am assuming that the problem would be a burnt CPU, the case was awfully hot went it crashed. Just looking for somebody to pat me on the back and tell me " yes Grasshopper you should have put those fans in when you noticed there were none".

I have already started shopping around, just wanted to have it pounded home for me.

Is there a fan/heatsink on the CPU? What are the specs on your system?? "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....."

Yup, it had a cpu fan and heatsink on it, I guess thats what had been keeping me up for as long as I was, Comp is about 1yr old now.


I was running an AMD duron, 750 MHz I think it was. Other than that nothing special, but It was being used alot, and um not being home for the past two days, with a heat wave, and the house up to about 100F and the machine still running didin't help I'm sure.

Already got the fans coming, and now I'm just looking at CPU's and MB's. Figure I'll go with Intel, just for the xtra bit of heat protection. Lessons learned. Oh well.

Try it again with the side off the case and a portable desk fan blowing on it. Make sure the CPU fan is turning and the power supply fan is turning (blowing). It could be the CPU or something else. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....."

Switching another Power Supply now, the fan looked a little shot on that. Had the case open for a few hours now, can't get any cooler than it is. Maybe, just maybe the powersupply shot itself. We'll see.

Duron 750's don't run too hot! and shouldn't need mega amounts of cooling, infact personally I wouldn't even bother with extra case fans unless you live in a very hot climate.
I know you have probably seen loads of posts about hot CPU's on this forum but we are talking Athlon 1gigs or above, anything below that spec shouldn't require any special cooling treatment.
I know it makes you feel good when you have an ultra cool CPU reading! and it certainly doesn't do any harm to run cool.
It sounds to me that your power supply fan seized up and popped itself (thats why it got hot!) does it smell burnt?
Cheap generic PSU's are probably the most unreliable component in your system and I am betting once replaced all will be fine! fingers crossed, XXXXXX Martin. Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

Lol, I just got up and running again,and you were absolutley right. Once I got permisson to swap parts with roomates comp, I swapped the PSU out and low and behold thats what it was. Paid $50 for a PSU at staples, but I was just anxious to get it up again and that was the only place around.

Thanks guys, live and learn. Atleast now I have a bit more experince under my belt.

I am pleased it wasn't too serious, it can be a little scary when a system goes down but it just goes to show how poorly made these power supplies are now, I hope the replacement proves a little more reliable than the old. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.
