I have an ASUS P4S333-C Motherboard and need some advice with a new CPU. This is the website for the motherboard

The motherboard has a 400MHz FSB. Processors with a 400MHz FSB are hard to get and I would like to get a 2.4GHz 533FSB CPU instead. My BIOS allows manual CPU settings and I can also override BOIS settings by using the onboard DIP switches.

My question is:

Am I right in saying that manually setting CPU settings in the BIOS only affects the clock bus and not the FSB? Also can I just stick a 533FSB CPU in there and let it run with a 400FSB setting?

Thanks heaps,

Samson

If you stick a 2.4GHz 533fsb chip in that board & run in at 400fsb, yes it will work, though it will operate underclocked at 1.8GHz. P4 cpu's have their multiplier locked & that cannot be changed. The fsb settings can be played with, but that's it.

With the price of P4's, the extra price you would be paying to purchase a cpu only to underclock it, the price difference is enough to where you might as well just purchase a new motherboard instead.

And there are 400fsb P4's out there, just check out pricewatch.
