Cpu heat question.

I have an amd 2100+ cpu with a HHC-L61 coolermaster copper pipe heatsink and fan but to me my cpu seems to be running pretty damn hot and occasionally falls over.

I have the psu fan and a rear exhaust fan behind the cpu and was getting under stress (high end graphics) temperatures of 72c with seems very high, but under browsing conditions etc its 64c constant still to me pretty damn high.
So i have at the moment clocked my 2100+ down to a 1500+ to keep it stable but im pretty annoyed ;/ still the cpu temp under stress reaches 58c at 1500+ clock speed.

I drilled into the side of my case chain drilled some holes and placed an 80mm fan directly opposite the processor and set it for intake at first. This bought the system temp down by 5c but the cpu temp increased by 4c, then i tried setting it for exhaust with bought the system temp up by 2c and the cpu temp down by 5c (all within space of 2 hours so ambient temperature wasnt a factor for change). When clocked upto 2100+ again becomes extremely hot 68c under high end graphics stress

The fan is only 14cfm and 3500rpm on the heatsink (silent fan)so i was maybe thinking get a bulkier fan to sit on top of it may help. But even then seems very high ;/

CPU maybe damaged possibly as a result of previous temp stresses? any suggestion on further cooling or a good heatsink/fan combo would be appreciated.

The Heatpipe is a damn good heatsink but the silent VERSION (there is a more powerful variant available)
has a pretty poor fan and thankfully can be easily swopped for a better unit.
Still with the standard unit your temps are very high.
The XP2.1+ is a very hot CPU but even having said that I think there is a problem:

Is the heatsink fitted 180 degrees out? it is possible and causes high temps and even CPU destruction because the base doesn't sit squarely on the core preventing propper heat transfer. (recess in base must be positioned over the socket "A" writing)

You MUST apply a small quantity of thermal heat transfer paste (about a rice grain sized amount) no more! on the small raised core of the processor.
Thermal pads are a use only once item.

Lastly I know of several motherboards at the moment that report incorrectly high CPU and case temps (abits NF7S for one) cured by a bios flash.

I have the same Palomino XP2.1+ that you have and I think mine is maxing a little high at 55C but as long as it doesn't creep into the 60's I will be happy.

One last note* the XP2.1+ has an actual clock speed of
1733mhz. Martin

I have 2 fans in the front of my case blowing in and 2 on the back blowing out plus the cpu fan/heatsink and the power supply fan and this keeps my athlonXP 1700+ at around 45 to 50 C.
I think that your processor is one of the hottest ones they have made. That being said, have you properly applied some thermal compound between the cpu and the heatsink? also make sure that the airflow in the case is unobstructed as possible. I use rounded cables which help with yhe airflow and keep things neater. A dual fan power supply could also be helpfull.
also make sure that the heatsink fan is blowing air onto the heatsink and not drawing it away from it. If you're going through Hell...keep going... (Winston Churchill)

I have seen the same myself. I have a Coolermaster copper base heatsink (HCC01?) which cost me £25. I installed it on my XP2000+, and it ran 10-15degC hotter than when I had the free fan which I got with the oem processor.
I have put the free fan back on, and the copper heatsink looks nice on my desk.

yes its as i feared these copper things are just expensive rubbish, just a gimmick to look nice, i will try swopping out the heatsink fan, i have the free coolermaster normal heatsink/fan i got with processor will try swapping out the fans and see how it goes thanks for the tips.

yes i did apply thermal grease the 5quid a tube silver thermal grease ;/ very sparingly but enough, i was just so worried i build a lot of pc's for friends etc and couldnt believe how damn hot it has got hehe.

I have solved the problem it was a combination of 2 things.

I removed the fan on the coolermaster to find all the fins where clogged with dust and fluff and i also swapped a 2700+ fan off the heatsink/fan i got with processor and onto the coolermaster now i get at 2100+ idle temp of 45.c and stressed temp of 51.c a saving of 19.c lol

Yup! the heatpipe ain't a piece of junk after all, just the inadequate fan and a note to everyone especially to those who have heatsinks with fine fins "they block up frequently" and do require periodic cleaning.
Smokers should be especially aware of the above! in all the system we have in for repair, those that come from smokers usually have at least twice as much build up of muck in the heatsink and fans. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.
