I read this on another web site. It makes no sense to me how, lack of a chunk of metal on your cpu, for a few seconds, will cause it to fry... it just doesn't seem logical to me :)

"If you apply power to a motherboard with an Athlon or Duron processor without the CPU fan connected, even for a few seconds, you will fry it"

I swapped CPU's with another computer to see if it would boot with my working CPU. I don't remember if I put the HS/Fan on it or not, but I don't think I did on the one I put in my comp. But neither computer would POST. So I switched the CPU's back, attached the Heatsink/Fans.

I have an AthlonXP 1800

OH yes! they will usually pop in about 7-10 seconds.
The chunk of metal (heatsink) draws away heat from the core and is cooled by the air blowing on the heatsinks fins.
The core effectively has to heat up that great chunk of metal before it can damage itself, without it the core heats up instantaniously without any control and burns out very quickly.
Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

That sucks lol :)
So I guess I have at least 1 fried cpu here. I took the 900mhz from my server and popped it in (with the heatsink/fan) & booted up first time.

Thanks for the info ^_^
