I am trying to replace the CPU fan on a dimension 4700 and having issues with dell's proprietary 5 pin connector. Can I just splice the three cables from my new fan (red, yellow, black) on the four cables (red, white, blue, black) of the dell connector and plug it into the motherboard? If so how do I connect the cables (red/red, black/black etc...??? thanks in advance

Unless you can determine the voltages present at all pins while operating using a multimeter (it probably won't power up w/o a CPU fan connected) and can re-use the old plug by cutting and crimping/shrink wrapping the connections, I'd just bite the bullet and buy a Dell replacement.

There's some discussion here that might help:

Best of luck.
