I am tring to boot up a win xp pro system which has a serial ATA because the user crashed the system?? I have tried to use last known config, recovery console (gives blue screen with ntfs.sys error message) and repair windows (gives blue screen with ntfs.sys error message also). I am now using the bootdisk procedure for windows xp from the below solution I found on another forum
[green]
I followed the suggestions above, but like Troope, I got stuck at the STOP C0000139 screen. I tried everything to no avail. Finally, I arrived at a solution. If nothing else works for you:

1. On a working computer, download the Windows XP setup disks from .
2. After writing the six disks, go to the first disk. Delete TXTSETUP.SI_ .
3. Copy TXTSETUP.SIF from your Windows XP CD-ROM into the first disk; it's found in the I386 directory of the CD-ROM.
4. Edit TXTSETUP.SIF in WordPad, putting a semicolon before the "ntfs = ntfs.sys" line so it reads ";ntfs = ntfs.sys".
5. Copy AUTOCHK.EXE to a blank diskette; it's found in the I386 directory of the Windows XP CD-ROM.
6. Start the computer with the 0x00000024 errors using the six Windows XP Setup disks.
7. Enter the Recovery Console.
8. Run chkdsk.
9. If it can't find AUTOCHK.EXE, insert the disk you made with that file and tell it that the file can be found on A:\autochk.exe . CHKDSK should work successfully, which didn't happen for me when I used the comments above.
10. CHKDSK found problems for me. I also ran FIXBOOT and FIXMBR; I'm not sure if this was necessary. It didn't appear that the problem was solved, but when I restarted my computer (without the aid of any disks or CDs), Windows booted up successfully.
[/green]
but when I boot with disk 4 I get this error
The file cpqarray.sys is corrupted
press any key to continue
then I have to start all over with the boot disk procedure

I have tried
copying cpqarray.sys from win xp cd sp1 and sp2 but that error still occurs. I also looked in compaqs website but found nothing for windows xp. Any other ideas?

Perhaps I can modify the txtsetup file in disk 1 to skip the checking of the cpqarray. I dont have a raid array of that kind anyhow.

The issue is the SATA drive and needed drivers. There are none natively if using boot diskettes or boot CDs, you need to use the F6 key. Which of course is not presented when using Recovery Console.

Workaround: Install Sysinternals NTFSDOS and use the NTFSCHK utility:
This will use the drivers of your SATA installation, mounting them under DOS. NTFSCHK allows you to run CHKDSK under DOS with the NTFSDOS package. Requires a floppy disk drive.

Second workaround: install the disk temporarily as a slave to a working XP system and run chkdsk /f

Is the read only download on the refered site the program to install.
Download NTFSDOS Pro (Read-Only) (1.8MB)

If so do I install it on my working system and then create a bootdisk for my non working system or do I install on the nonworking system.

Yes, the read-only version.

Install on working system and run on the non-working one.

F6 key. Which of course is not presented when using Recovery Console".

Recovery Console gives this message after the NtDetect Checking phase and before loading the Console -

"Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver..."

When the Recovery Console starts, you have the opportunity to press F6 to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver, in case you need such a driver to access the hard disk. This prompt works the same as it does during installation of the operating system.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Extract the NTFSCHK files only and copy them to a 9x Boot floppy to use the program. Don't copy all the NTFSDOS Pro (Read-Only) files as there is not enough room on the floppy for those too.

This is a list of the files on a boot floppy, converted from a 9x boot floppy to run NTFSCHK.

After you have booted from the floppy start the program with NTFSCHK /? to get the command options.

When Extracting the NTFSCHK files the file
C_850.gz
did not extract out only the below.

FYI - When prompted to select a file on my system to copy the installation files from I selected C:/windows.

I created a windows 98 bootdisk but they only have these files

Now add the contents of the sysinternals file as outlined by linney above.

Boot with this floppy.

The floppy cannot be read by the computer and I am getting:

non-system disk or disk error
replace and strike any key when ready
Below is the contents of my floppy.

1. Using the bootable image you downloaded earlier, create a bootable Win98SE floppy.

2. Edit the floppy in XP by delete all but these files:

3. Make sure your BIOS is pointing at the floppy as the first device to boot from.

Go for it.

I am ready to give up! This is what I am getting now

invalid system disk, replace the disk.......

I created a bootdisk and put in the file needed and made sure the computer boots up with floppy first.

You could try formatting (not a Quick format) the floppy in XP, then creating a 9x boot floppy using that same formatted floppy, then amending the file list as described earlier.

BartPE has ChkDsk included, but that means creating a bootable CD. This will link you to it plus some other alternatives. Speaking of alternatives, what about removing the hard drive and trying it on another machine?

Cannot logon to winxp...losing lots of valuable documents

I have tried the quick format but still no progress, same error. I have tried the Hdd on another machine but the machine will still try to boot up with this bad hdd rather then the main hdd. I have talked to seagate about this and they said to call intel since it maybe something in the bios. Seagate worked with me on the bios setting to have the good hdd boot up but same result.

I will try BartPe.

You should not care. You want to run Recovery Console. Place your SATA drivers on a floppy disk, boot from the XP CD, and R to run Recovery Console.

You can use the MAP command to figure out disk assignments for subsequent use of the CHKDSK /r command.

ok I will try that. I have also tried the BartPE. After the BartPE starts up from the iso image I immedialely get the blue screen: ntfs.sys.....

thanks for all your help but I ended up cloning the sata drive to an ata drive and then I was able to run chkdsk /r and got the os up and running.
