I thought I'd figured out the basics on configuring clients on W2k server (1 domain, 1 group, shared printing). HOWEVER, my previous PC clients were Win2k Pro; the next 3 are Win98 and Win95.

The Problem: Win98 clients can't ping - inside (PC01) or outside (yahoo.com) the LAN.

What's changed:
1. At first, I had PCs and svr connected to hub; then hub uplinked to router; router to modem. Router handled DHCP and DNS, but since we can't configure/access the router (it's one of those pkg deals from the vendor), it was suggested we bypass it. So we

2. installed another network card, connected the cable modem directly to server (no more router). Now DHCP and DNS must be run from Win2k server (since router is out of the config).

QUESTION: What's different on the Win98 network properties so the Win98 clients can ping the internal and outside (yahoo.com) network?

Win98 network properties say:
- TCP/IP: no other protocols
- use DHCP for WINS resolution: obviously not working
- obtain IPs automatically: which it does.

What else is different about W98 network config? thx a bunch...

Not certain about this but thinkyou can try disabling WINS on the 98 clients and then manually add theIP address of thr DNS server or put the DNS server in the scope options of the DHCP server. After this running winipcfgon the 98 machines should show node type 'Broadcast'. If it still doesn't work try pinging the machines by IP address to check it is definately a Name resolution problem.
