When attempting to upgrade to Relase Candidate 1, I receive this error:

"The file epatap2k.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue".

Pressing the Enter key just gives me the option to reboot and the same error message results.

I recognized the file to be part of HP Colorado Backup II Version 9.0. So, I uninstalled that software. I also removed the file from c:\windows\wystem32\drivers. I also renamed or removed the 3 references to it in the Registry. I rebooted. The setup still fails with the same error.

Fortunately, I have a partition image taken prior to the aborted installation attempt. So, I have been able to revert back to Code Name Whistler.

Does anyone have any ideas for me to try to get the update to RC-1 to install?

I really messed up my system trying to upgrade to XP.
I did the same things as you did; deleting the epatap2k.sys and epatap2k.inf and removing the registry entries. Now, XP say's it can't find epatap2k.sys, plus it fails to boot to W2K saying "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE".

I did originally try to disable the epatap2k service.
I am going to try to reinsert the deleted registry entries somehow to get back to the original OS.

Good luck.

Chris,

I finally gave up on installing RC-1 or RC-2, figuring I will wait for the October 25th release. The only way I was able to get past the error message was to do a clean install from the CD. This worked, but I would have had to reinstall all my software, data files, etc. So I restored the image of the earlier XP Beta and have been using that. Once I purchase XP Professional, I plan to wipe the hard disk clean and do a full install.

If you have better luck than I did, let me know how you did it.

Mel
