I have encountered a very strange problem that has just started to occur with eMail attachments. Basically any files that I attach and send out seem to get corrupted for no good reason that I can see. Symptoms are that, although most data seems to be still in the files concerned, they have been chewed up to the extent that, for example, Word or Excel no longer recognises the format or states that the files concerned are corrupted.
I have completely scanned my disk with the very latest McAfee virus checker, which found no viruses whatsoever.
In order to eliminate software corruption problems, I then reinstalled Windows 98 from the CD-ROM, and then for good measure upgraded to IE 6 from the Microsoft web site.
Everything else on the system seems to work normally, but all attachments that I send back to myself by eMail seem to remain corrupted.
One other thing to mention is that files that I uploaded to a web site directly (i.e. not using eMail) are also corrupted when I try to read them back, with the same symptoms as with eMail.
I have a Hotmail eMail address. The problem is exactly the same irrespective of whether I connect directly to Hotmail via the browser or use Outlook Express.
Anybody got any ideas?
