Copy in Recovery Mode

My computer crashed and now will not restart. I have been able to get to the recovery console and when I run a DIR on the c:\Windows directory I get a director enumeration error. I have run chkdsk /f several times with no improvement. So I am assuming I need to reinstall windows and should probably reformat the disk first.

So my question is are there any programs that can be run in recovery mode to copy off my data files. the copy command will not allow wildcards so only one file can be copied at a time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Get yourself a BART PE CD (free) and you can boot up to it with a USB memory stick attached to your computer or 2nd external or internal hard drive and you can use a built in "explorer" like utility (A43 File Management)to copy your data off onto the other storage location.

Don't be intimidated by it, the basic CD without any extra plugins will take care of your needs.


You might also try running the manufacturer's hard drive utility to verify that the drive is dead/dieing. Most of them are available by creating the Ultimate Boot CD

look for MBRWORK in the free tolls and download it, put it on a DOS floppy (one made by formatting in XP and taking the MSDOS Startup disk option will do).

Boot that and run MBRWORK
Use options
1 (to back up the current state, so it could be restored with 2)
3 then 4 to delete the current code and tables
there will then be a possibility of using A
which will scan the disk for 'signatures' of partitions and rebuilt the partition table then

to install standard MBR code so the disk could be booted
