I'm used to using the copy ftp flash command to load IOS images onto routers, but this process fails on both the 3725 and 3745 routers.

I use:

ip ftp username a
ip ftp password a
no ip ftp passive

This works with my FTP client on any Cisco router that supports the copy ftp flash command apart from these new boxes. I've tried using the FTP passive mode as well, no joy.

Has anyone else used this feature, if so what FTP server did you use?

You do of course mean copy tftp flash? Not ftp?

No, I mean copy FTP flash, its a far quicker way of transferring IOS images onto a router. I'm not sure when support for this feature was introduced, but it sure beats waiting around for a TFTP upload.

Try enter the command on one of your routers.

I've now had 3 3725 routers and last night I tried this on a 3745, the FTP transfer starts but then I get a protocol error.

Well, f**k me with a fish fork. I would have bet my house on you meaning TFTP!

SHGTSSXXROCI353#copy ?
/erase Erase destination file system.
flash: Copy from flash: file system
ftp: Copy from ftp: file system
null: Copy from null: file system
nvram: Copy from nvram: file system

tftp: Copy from tftp: file system
xmodem: Copy from xmodem: file system
ymodem: Copy from ymodem: file system

Hmm, I should have considered my reply more carefully, could have done a nice deal there:)

When this works its brill, but when I tried it on my first 3725 I ended up deleting the entire flash contents and had to re-install the IOS through the serial port, arrrgh!!

I've even taken a sniffer trace of the failure, seems like Cisco have introduce a new `feature' into the FTP copy process, nice of them.

isn't that typical of Cisco?....lol

Hi

I have used FTP transfers on 3600 series routers where the IOS is large, but not on 37xx. It is necessary because of a filesize limit of 16MB on tftp transfers. I am not sure if this is a general limitation, or just an issue with the Cisco tftp server, which they no longer support.

I use a free combined ftp/tftp server from 3Com, works fine as long as you remember the no ip ftp passive, which is not mentioned in the documents on CCO.

Hi EB, I'll try that FTP server. I'm using Chameleon Ver 8.00 from Netmanage, works fine with all routers apart from these new one's.

I think its down to duff programming in the code on these routers, but now that I've said as much I'm sure I'll be proved wrong.

As for the `no ip ftp passive' I came across that one as well, Cisco dont make it easy for us do they?

The program is called 3cdaemon. It also does a good job of syslogging.
