I didn't know where to put this, so I put it here. I want to copy the recovery partition and only the recovery partition from one hard drive to another. What would be the best way to do this?

Ghost or similar product. You would do a partition to partition image operation and pick the recovery partition as the source.

Not sure if that's legal though since the recovery partition is licensed for use on a particular computer, with a particular OS and manufacturer, etc.

boot to a bartPE disk, run ghost, create an image of the recovery partition, restart, plug in target drive, run ghost, restore partition to target drive. quit ghost, unmount target drive.

i think that pretty much covers it.
there are other utilities besides BartPE disk with ghost.

Should think it's ok, the poster stated one drive to another so possibly in the same pc (i.e. bigger driver)

Some drive maker do free disk imaging tools for this sort of work. Check out their websites.

Seagates is here.

Since when did Bart PE come with a plugin for Ghost?? Is that legal??? Can I have linky?

I mashed the ISO image (it seems like LONG ago) using the basic bartPE and an old copy of Ghost8 i had around and a few other odd apps for a grand total of about a 300MB ISO file. i really need to redo it using some more recent apps.

I am thinking i should try SelfImage instead of Ghost. and some of the portable apps like those here: but am also loathe to change something that has worked so well for me for so long.

Ok. Is there a way to make a recovery partition. I want to use Dell's backup utility on an older dell pc (we are getting 380's with it and I want to install it on a 360 which doesn't have it.) It would help out in staging a mass of computers vs having to do all the settings over and over again.

Ok, so the recovery partition is not what I really need I guess. I've been experimenting and I guess what I need is the windows recovery environment installed on an xp machine. I should probably do a search first, but I already have the thread open. Might as well update. Is there any legality issues in installing the windows recovery environment on an xp machine? How does one go about doing such an act?

Windows XP and Windows 2000 are limited to the Recovery Console.
Source:
When the computer fails to start, Windows automatically fails over into this environment, and the Startup Repair tool in Windows RE automates the diagnosis and repair of an unbootable Windows Vista installation.

Which basically says it all... Vista and later OS, this will work, for XP and earlier, you are possibly out of luck...

I did read about XP not having such environment, but every dell we have ordered for the past 6 months have had it installed somehow. They use the Dell Backup & Recovery manager to access it and create a bootable dvd that will bring the unit back to where you last backed it up. I would like to use this on other dell PC's, but I am unable to figure out how it works.

Who knows??? It's Dell proprietary, so it's not out in the open.
