I've been asked to try and resolve this.....I have some files created in Works with the .wps extension. The user didn't know he was saving them as .wps files and now needs to be able to work with them in Word. The problem is the files have all of the formatting mumbo-jumbo. I read back through some old posts on .wps files and have tried saving them as .txt and .doc but still have the all of the formatting stuff.

Any suggestions?

If you go to the Microsoft Office Website

click on Word. Once on the next page, choose converters and viewers. There are several add-ins for Works 6 and Works 2000. This will download an executable. Run this, and your converter will be installed. See list below.

---------

Works 6.0 Converter for Works and Word Users
Download Now! 1495kb / 9 mins
The Works 6.0 Converter allows you to convert word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other Works programs. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97.

Works 2000 Converter for Word 2000 Users
Download Now! 789kb / 5 mins
The Works 2000 converter allows you to open a Works 2000 .wps file in Word and to save a Word document as a Works 2000 .wps file.

Works 2000 Converter for Word 97 Users
Download Now! 789kb / 5 mins
The Works 2000 converter allows you to open a Works 2000 .wps file in Word and to save a Word document as a Works 2000 .wps file.

You may only need to tell it that you are opening WPS files. Word 2000 and up have this option. Word 97 did not (as I recall).

Choose the files of type from the dropdown at the bottom of the file-open dialog and change to Works *.wps. If you're just choosing to open them using All files *.*, they may not open properly.

If they still don't open, then Tom's already given you your next move.

Actually, I had already downloaded and installed the Works 6.0 converter. This is a probably a dumb question, but after having installed the converter shouldn't it appear in the drop down "files of type" box in Word? All I have for .wps is Works for Windows 4.0 which comes as a part of the Office 2000 package.
