Converting Workgroup .mdw from 97 to 2003

I have a problem in that I need to maintain seurity of all the databases we have on the server. I am aware of the inherant dangers of Workgroups but have never used them. I have been advised by a member of staff that these can be converted to Access 2003. Is this true? However, after looking at the microsoft site it states that you should recreate the workgroup information files from Access 97.
Another possible problem I may encounter is if any hard coding exists in some of the older databases they may become unreadable.
I would be most grateful if anyone out there is able to help.
