Hi

I am running about 45 users on an NT small business server. They are all assigned IP addresses and when installing a new machine I have to search out a free address. I cant see any reason why we dont have DHCP.

However I am unclear as to how this works. Obviously the clients network properties are set for DHCP but how do you configure this on the server. Also how do you set exeptions up to that the servers and gateways reatin a static address

Your network routers should have options to configure DHCP, DNS and WINS addresses. You configure these with the relevant server IP addresses.

As for your server and gateways, keep these as static. Keep your DHCP and static ranges seperate. For example, your DHCp scope could be from 125.1.100.1 to 125.1.150.254 and your static range could be anything other than this.

As for configuring a DHCP service, check the Microsoft website for details on how to configure your NT server. "It's true, its damn true!"

HI.

You can implement DHCP on your SBS server
(better then configuring the router for my opinion).

If you don't know how - it is not a big deal but I suggest you ask some pro to help.
There are some tricky issues, like you need to reapply service pack and patches after adding services, and with SBS you sometimes get surprises.

Another option that seems better for you - keep using manual IP assignment, just create a list of current IP addresses and update it whenever you make changes.
I would not suggest this for a new installation, but if it is already set up and working, why change?

If you still want to switch to DHCP, you can repost here to get more info.
