Hi,

Does anybody has experience with converting IMS/DB2 to Oracle?

Very interesting parts are:

> how to convert MFS screens to Oracle Forms
> how to handle MID, MOD, DIF, DOF
> how to convert the hierarchical concept of IMS to SQL approach
> are there difficulties converting DB2 one-to-one to Oracle?

I guess that nobody - except my customer - ever converts from DB2 to Oracle.....

Is the conclusion that Oracle is inferior to DB2?

I have no experience in DB2 migrating to Oracle, but we just had migrated one entire banking system from mainframe (VSAM files, IDMS) to Oracle.

Based on this experience, the migration work including the screens (although we did not migrate to Oracle Forms), batch processes, and the way to access data are purely manual and it requires a lot of hard work on the design and the actual programming itself.

DB2 is a major database also. I am just wondering why they intend to migrate? In your question about inferiority of Oracle, I can not answer that bec I myself don't have experience with DB2. Maybe your Oracle representative has a better answer to that question.

Hi Robbie,

Thanks for your answer. IDMS and VSAM are realy very old, not comparable to DB2.

When you convert from anything to anything else, you should always do it automated because if you don't, you are out of budget if you changes your mind in some ways, while changing the converting software will always be not that much work.

The reason to ask the question is to find some good tips for conversion-rules so that it becomes easier to make such an automated conversion.

Thanks again!
