I have been trying to convert to the nt file system, but keep getting a message that there is insufficient space but doesn't seem logical (33 gb free, 24 gb used. Any idea what is going wrong? Can't read the entire message for it quickly chnges to the xp log on screen.

See if you can pick up the entire message in your Event Viewer. Look in the System folder for Application Popup. You can use the View menu/ Filter to help you find it.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run Disk Cleanup, and use the "More Options" tab to remove all but your most recent System Restore Points. This will free up a lot more space.

Defrag the drive.

Have another go with Convert.
