I have an Athlonxp 1500+ running on Win 98 and I was playing my games on a Voodoo3 3000PCI.Constantly my games were locking up and I had to restart.I assumed it was the card overheating and bought a geforce2 MX200.It was doing exactly the same. I thought as that card didnt have a fan as well it was also overheating so I got my money back and just bought a geforce 2 GTS.My games are still locking up and I cant get my money back on the card. Why is it locking up?Its not a bad windows install as Ive reformatted loads of times when I had the Voodoo.

Could be the processor is getting too hot... Is the fan on top of the processor turn ok? Is there heatsink compound between the heatsink and the processor? Can you check the processor temperature in your BIOS? Other than the fan inside the PSU, does your machine have any other case fans? It's possible the game programme might be conflicting with either the operating system or some other software you have running? Do you get the same problem running any other applications?

Try a clean reinstall of the game. In order to perform a clean install of
the game, you'll need to perform the following procedures.

1) Uninstall the game using the Add/Remove Programs control panel in
Windows.

2) Delete the folder for the game, located on your hard drive. When you
uninstall a game, this folder is usually left behind for you to delete
manually.

3) Restart your computer, and run the programs Scandisk and Disk
Defragmenter. These are two utilities that are provided with Windows, and
they monitor, clean, and repair your hard drive.

4) Disable applications running in the background.

To do this, hold down the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys, all at the same time. This
will bring up the Close Program dialog box. In here, you will see a number
of items. The only ones that Windows needs to run are Systray and Explorer.
All other programs here are extraneous, and are not necessary for Windows to
function.

Since they may be causing conflicts or memory problems, you will want to
turn them off. Don't worry - nothing we do here is permanent; everything
here will return when you restart the computer. Select a program (besides
Explorer and Systray), and then click the End Task button at the bottom of
this window. If another window pops up saying that the program is not
responding, click End Task on this window as well. This will drop you out
to the desktop. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again, and repeat as necessary until
only Explorer and Systray are left.

5) Clean the CD.

You can do this by washing the CD under luke-warm water. Use a liquid
detergent that is non-abrasive and use your fingers to spread the soap
evenly across the shiny underside. To dry the CD use a soft cotton
lint-free towel that will not create any further scratches. Paper towels
are highly discouraged due to the abrasive nature of the fabric.

When drying, make sure that you wipe from the inner-circle towards the
outer-circle. Wipe against the grain, so you don't leave streaks the same
way that the laser reads.

6) Reinstall the program.

7)Especially make sure you disable your Anti-virus software.

Download and install the latest Direct X 8a
Download and install the latest Nvidia Detonator drivers for Win98.
Monitor your absolute Maximum temperatures imediately after playing your game, (within a few seconds if poss)
A lot of motherboards come with hardware monitoring software, if you havn't got it try and download it.
you shouldn't be seeing max's any higher than 55C with an XP1500+ and you will definately be getting problems in the low 60's, with proper cooling ie: A decent heatsink/fan and a couple of extra case fans (lower front drawing in, back centre Exhausting) this max will be contained below 50C and idling in the high 30's.
These figures with average room temps around 20C. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
