Hi all,

First, I need to say that I'm a real newbie regarding the Cisco settings but...

I have a prob with one which I tried to change password by following the password recovery procedure from Cisco website, by using hyper term.

When I start the switch, I could be on Rommon prompt...
But, when typing confreg etc, it says Command not found.

And if I type Boot, it's going to Console prompt.

I have only a fiew knowledge regarding IOS, but, I found from the Console prompt more commands.
From this prompt, what is the exact command to set up the VLAN ?
Tried to put an ip address subnet etc, but it says invalid ip or state....

Could someone help ???

Thanks
Drizzt

If doing password recovery on catalyst 2948, it may ask you to restart the switch and input something fairly long in a short while(perhaps 30 seconds). so do it quickly (use copy and paste), and view cisco website for details.

NOTE the step of password recovery for 2948 is greatly different from 2950's or 3550's, so make sure you found the right one.

the 2948's use the same code as the 4000 series switches (catalyst OS)..

use those recovery procedures to help you

What is the difference between "Catalyst OS" and "IOS" ?? Thanks

The difference is basically the command structure of the 2 os's . Catos uses a "set" based command structure to implement features whereas the IOS configuration is done either at the global level or on a per interface level . A little hard to explain here but they are 2 totally different animals . For layer 2 switches I actually prefer catos , faster to configure stuff. Cisco is currently moving away from this and I predict within a couple of years catos will be gone on any new switches, everything will be IOS.
