Console ports, some work some don't

Hello,
One of our laptops gets completely hanged when trying to use CONSOLE port at some switches (many models, 2924, 3524, 3550). As soon as you connect to the switch it (the PC) freezes, you have to disconnect the cable to get it working again.
BUT this PC works great with some other switches and routers (some of them are the same model and version that the ones that doesn't work).
I've checked all the COM port and hyperterminal settings, used other terminal emulation software, updated Laptop's BIOS, updated Windows 2000 Professional...

¿Does anybody have any clues to solve this problem?

Ive ran into this alot with Dell Laptops. Dont know why, they just dont like Cisco devices.

Never ran into this with Dell laptops, what Cisco Devices are you using? Some use a 1-8...8-1 console cable, some use a 1-1...8-8 cable...
All my 2900's 4006's, 6509 and routers use the 8-1...1-8 cables...

I use 2924XLs and 3548XLs.

On my Dell Inspirons, sometimes the inspiron would freeze when rebooting the switch while consoled in, and sometimes, the switch would freeze while rebooting laptop while consoled in.

never had that problem, I use Inspiron 8000, 4000, and 3800's, on 2924XLM, 3548XL, 2924C, 4006, 6509, and some 2600 series routers with no problems out of them with everything from 98 to XP for the OS's...

Shnypr, It's a dell laptop (Latitude CPx j) !!

But we have a few of them (Same model, Bios ver, OS) here and this is the only one that works only with some of the switches .

The connection is the usual : Rollover cable and rj-45 to db9 adapter.
As soon as you click conect at the Hyperterminal the computer freezes, when you disconnect the cable the computer continues working fine.

I'm thinking in re-installing W2000,
do you think that doing this would solve the problem?

Just a thought.

It may just be the Win2K OS. I know that hyperterminal had a few issues with Win2K. You could try a different terminal program, there are alot of free ones on the web. That would tell you wether it was hyperterm or not.

Cause come to think about it, I havent had any issues with XP at all.

Yea, my current laptop is running XP, although I didn't have any issues with 2000, it could also be a corrupted com port driver... only thing I can think of....

I reinstalled the COM port drivers, I´ve tried another terminal software, and the same happened
Since we have more of those laptops I installed the HD of a working laptop in this f%&*ing capricious one and it behaved the same way. So I suppose it's a hardware problem that shows up just with some cisco devices.
COM port tests say everiyhing it's OK.
