I have a Cisco 2600 router. i have the rollover cable connected to the port on the router. But i still can't access the console on the router any ideas? I'm using both windows hyperterminal and tera term.

You have the Cisco blue console cable connected to the console port of the router? The other end should be connected to your serial port via adapter.

Com port settings
Baud - 9600
Data Bits - 8
Parity - None
Stop Bits - 1
Hardware accelaration - none

yes everthing is connected correctly.

Do you get anything from the router console port, ie. error messages, etc?
Try pulling an interface to see if you get an error message.
If the router is not in service, try booting the router while connected to the console port and see if you get any boot information from the router.
If not, verify the terminal settings: Comm 1 (or what ever comm. port you have), 9600 8N1, no flow control, terminal type VT100 ANSI.
If you still cannot connect verify your cable again. Here is the Cisco link for console cable information:
You can verify your terminal session is actually passing data by shorting the TX & RX data pins, (pins 3 & 6) on the console cable and typing in the terminal session. If that does not work, remove the console cable from your comm. port, and short pins 2 & 3 together on the serial port, (install a loop-back plug) on the computer and try to type a message.

FYI, I never did like Windows HyperTerminal. I use Hyper Terminal PE (Private Edition).
It is available from It is very similar to HyperTerm, but a little more user friendly.

You should be able to logg in thru the AUX port also. You may want to try differ cables or a pc. Verfiy you have the cable plugged into com1 (which ever is set on your pc) like robert just mentioned. Yeah use Hyper PE, I like it alot.

Hi sikek

A couple of things.

If you have a rollover cable as opposed to a complete Cisco console cable with a built-in 9-pin connector, you still need Cisco's 9-pin adapter plug (marked 'Terminal').

The flow control needs to be 'none'.

Also be aware that it is possible that the console speed is not at the default value of 9600. In some cases where the PC's COM port & the console are not set the same you can get no display. Try changing your COM port speed.

it was now i just switched cables thanks to everyone who help out on this issue.

hi, I have a problem connecting to console as well. What is the difference between db-9 with "terminal" label and the one who doesnt have the label?

I got this adapter with rj-45 on one end and db-9 male on the other. As it couldnt connect to any of my COM port, I bought db-9 to db-25 male adapter. And I still couldnt access the router via console port. I already downloaded the hyperterminal PE and set the parameter to 9600-8-None-1-None.

How to set up COM port in your PC? How do you know which serial is belong to which COM port?

Thank you very much for your help.

Do yourself a favor and go to radioshack and buy a db9 null modem adaptor , get a straightthru and one rollover cable and with this combo you will be able to get into almost any cisco gear .

thanx vipergg,
