This is driving me crazy!!! I'm not only the user but administrator equivalent on my computer (2000), so what can possibly be the problem? I've already performed a search on the subject (i.e. foxresource) and noticed only 1 thread concerning this matter was posted. Do I have to remove an entry in the registry? Create a new resource file? This began a couple months ago (don't know if I did anything to set it off), but it's driving me insane!!! Especially when I want to customize my environment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Vernon

Hi Vernon,

Use ?SYS(2005) to find the current resource file. If you delete it it will be automatically recreated at the next program start. You lose all your settings, though. Delete both the .dbf and .fpt.

Regards,

Mike

Vernon,

Are the two Foxuser files really read-only (have you checked the properties sheet), or is this a rogue error message?

If the former, what happens when you reset them to not read-only? Do they become read-only again of their own accord, or what?

Also, are you sure you are checking the correct files (as Mspratt says, use SYS(2005) to fine out), and are you checking both of them (the DBF and the FPT)?

Mike

mspratt,

Thanks for your suggestion. I did check sys(2005) and checked the properties. Read Only. I'll bite the bullet and delete them.

Mike Lewis,

Thank you as well. I'm going to delete the files like Mike (mspratt) suggested.

Appreciate the help,

Vernon

bad news... didn't work. Removed files, they returned "Read Only". Any other suggestions?

Hi Vernon,

When you call up their properties, can you un-check the Read Only property? Are the files in a Read Only subdirectory? Something weird going on here. What OS?

Regards,

Mike

OS = Win 2k

Directory isn't 'Read Only'

Funny thing about this, when I set the resource file to another destination, the file is marked 'Read Only' as well when I try to make adjustments.

Weird isn't quite the word I'm thinking... LMAO

Vernon,

This is really weird. There must be some process that is changing the read-only flag, but I can't imagine what it is.

By the way, how does the problem manifest itself? Are you seeing an error message? Or are the resource files simply not being updated? If the latter, how can you tell?

Mike,

It's happening when I exit Task Pane ("... cursor Foxresource can not update it's read-only") and the usual "Cancel Suspend Ignore" buttons appear. As for the Foxuser.dbf/fpt, it remains untouched as the they both have a date & time stamp when the product was first installed (even after deleting them!) On the other hand, my machine at home works wonderfully (OS=XP)

If there's anymore info you may need, don't hesitate to ask. I really appreciate the help you're giving me.

Thanks,

Vernon

Vernon,

the they both have a date & time stamp when the product was first installed (even after deleting them!)

But that's surely impossible. If you delete a file and then re-create it, how can it have the same timestamp as the one you deleted? I'm sorry but all the evidence suggests that you are looking at different copies of the files.

Also, re that error message you are seeeing. I suspect that this caused by some specific code in the task pane manager, given that you don't see this message anywere else. It might be worth disabling the task manager to see if that makes any difference.

Mike

Mike,

I'm sorry...LOL... this problem has me seeing things. After deleting the date & time stamp reflect the newly created file, hoewever still receive error message "Cannot update the cursor FOXRESOURCE, since it is read-only" when exiting

When I try to change something via 'Tools/Options' the 'Set as Default' button isn't enabled so my settings are lost when I restart Foxpro.

Should I reinstall the product?

BTW, I'm giving you a star for being patient and helpful.

Thanks,

Vernon

Vernon,

Just a hunch, do you have the resource file included in a project? This will make it read-only. The same with config.fpw.
Check this out:

Vernon,

Thanks for the star. I only wish that I had found a solution to earn it.

the 'Set as Default' button isn't enabled

That rings a bell. I vaguely recall a thread here a week or two ago in which someone reported the same issue. I think it was caused by a registry problem. Perhaps you could try searching for it.

Eguy,

do you have the resource file included in a project? This will make it read-only.

True, but only if the file was bound into an EXE, which is probably not the case here given that Vernon's problem occurs in the development environment.

Mike

Mike,

I performed a search and read a thread concerning the same problem. The provided solution worked for the individual, however didn't work in my case. Question, do I have to remove something from the registry??

FWIW, a number of the tools that come with VFP and are written in VFP use a class that lets them read info from FoxUser. I think the problem is in some operation being performed by that class.

Tamar

You may actually have a computer issue, rather than a FoxPro one! We had this problem in the office a while back with Win 2000, where most files (may have been all) ended up permanently write-protected.

I cannot remember the solution, but I think it ended up being a format c: job, and I do recall it stemed from a virus.

Could only find this on Google:

Anyway, you may be better off posting in a Win 2000 forum, they may have the answer.

Neil

I like work. It fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours...

Vernon,

Neil suggestion sounds likely considering all the things you have tried. However continuing the VFP theme...

Have you tried running the taskpane with RESOURCE off?

When you deleted the Foxuser files and restarted VFP, did you try changing something before you ran the taskpane? Did it work then?

Going back to the properties of the files. If you set them to NOT read-only (the dbf & fpt), are they set back to read-only as soon as you run VFP or only when you run the taskpane?

There is a program called FoxResource that opens and updates the Foxuser table as part of the functionality of the Taskpane, Toolbox and Foxref (which I think is the Code References tool).

Have you tried suspending when you get the error?

Hope that helps,

Stewart
