Connect XP Microsoft Fax to 2000 Advanced Server Microsoft Fax

I have not used microsoft fax in the past but my boss wants me to give it a try.

I have a 2000 Advanced Server (DC)
USR Faxmodem

XP Pro
Fax Services Components installed


When I installed the modem in our server 2000 automatically installed the fax components.

In Xp when i added the fax service components it installed them.

Problem is i am wanting to use the fax printer on the server. I cannot connect to it as specified by XP. XP says im supposed to add it like a network printer which i tried but it cannot connect.

I went to the server to try and "share" it but in the Fax Printer properties on the 2000 server it states sharing is not supported by this device. My question is how am i supposed to connect to the Fax Printer on 2000 Server?

Rumor has it im supposed to be able to connect to a remote machine to use microsoft fax.

Can someone shed some light on this?

I am having the same problem. Is there a way to make the fax service available to client machines?

I had the same problem and what I did to correct the problem was create a passthrough for the users id. Basicly whatever the Usersname was on the client machine (assuming your on a workgroup) I made the same ID and password on the server. This worked for me I hope it works for you.

You could use 'printer services for unix' which you can install through add/remove windows features.

You must start the TCP/IP Print server service on both client and server and set it to 'Automatic'

This adds a new port when setting up a printer, instead of selecting network printer choose LRP port and add new port. Put the servers name/ip address and also the share name of the 'fax printer'.

This way gets round having to add every user to the server and keep passwords syncronise problem.
