Connect to Work domain using Windpws 7 Home 1

My office administrator says I cannot connect my Acer laptop which has Windows 7 Home to the wireless domain at the office.Is this true?

Surely if the domain administrator simply gives me the wireless password I should be able to connect to the wireless network just as if I was connecting to my home network?

If not, does this really meaning upgrading Win7 to the professional version?

If the only authentication for office wireless network is this password, then yes. Should ask your administrator.

Windows Home does not have support for joining a Domain.

However a Wireless network password is completely different thing than a Domain network user and password combo.

One is used to connect to the Wireless network, and the other is used to Join the actual computer based domain that may or may not be wireless, or even part of the wireless network to which you wish to connect.

The wireless password would likely only give you access to the Internet, but not to any domain based resources such as server shared folders, or domain printers.

Are you talking about connecting to a Domain machine or Server, or are you talking about actually joining the Home edition to a Domain? The latter is probably not possible.

I have win7 home machines operating around a domain environment, to join win7 to a domain you must have win7 business and above.

you can however like "vacunita" says join the machine to the wireless for internet access ask your administrator for that specific point

if you have a account created on the domain for you, then create a short cut to specific shared files on the laptop as long as the password is the same as your domain log on you will be able to access those files with the right permissions granted.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply.

All my colleague wants is to have access to the internet, using wireless access. He is not interested in having access to the rest of the resources on the domain. As it is a church they are very keen on avoiding access to 'unsuitable' sites.

Thus the domain manager seems to have blocked access to YouTube via the domain.

If all he wants is internet access, then yes, he can ask for the Wireless network password also known as WEP key.

The domain manager may have blocked access via the firewall in which case, at least in the way I configure my networks, YouTube would still be blocked.
