T7316e/T7316 phones
MICS 7.0
CP 100 version: 31.10.14.22

This started probably 2 months ago and I originally wrote it off as a buggy phone...

Not sure if this matters but I will include the Extension #'s as I tell the tale. Two months ago, extension 117 was having issues. It had some buttons that wouldnt work and would go through the flashing lights/LED boot at random times even though it was constantly plugged in and then loose programming. After reprogramming a few times and no luck, I replaced the unit and it has been fine ever since. I took the phone to my office and plugged it in my extension and it worked fine the first time. The unit has been sitting in storage since.
A couple days ago, Extension 135 was doing the flashing light/LED and loosing programming. I could sometimes get done reprogramming all the buttons and it work fine for a minute or it would do the "boot" flashing in the middle. Took my known good phone down there it did the same thing. Was thinking wiring between Ext 135 and Blocks so I took my phone and hard wired into the blocks and it worked fine, reprogrammed the buttons and let it sit all night, came back in the morning and it was still good. So I went back to the building Ext 135 is wired and plugged in my known good phone and it was working fine..... Then I plugged in the old phone and it was working fine..... Has been working fine since then....
Yesterday, ext 129 would display time but when you picked up the phone, no dial tone and pushing the buttons to the right did nothing and pushing the numeric buttons made tones but nothing happened. Unplugged it and let it sit for a minute and plugged it back in, works fine......
Today, Ext 119 did the same thing as above but when I plugged my known good phone in it worked fine. So I grabbed the original phone from Ext 117(at the top of this post) and plugged it in, has been working fine for an hour....

Are these events related? We have a total of, I think, 32 Extensions. The only correlation I possibly see is that they are all on EXT 117 and higher. Does that mean the card controlling them is going out? Is there multiple cards that would be in our small system? Is it just a "dirty" power situations because we have not the cleanest incoming power? Am I going to be experiencing a total system failure? What can I test because everything else works fine including all other high Extensions, mine included.

@silver - not yet. A little gun shy of doing so, as in the only way I know how is to physically unplug the power to the hardware. How long would it take the entire system to come back up?

@DBrew - any easy way to tell?

Should not take more than 5 min. Can you do a back up first?

Wayne T

Can I, not at the moment. Could I, probably but would like to know how first :)

Must have a RAD (remote access device) and NRU 11 (norstar remote utilities)

Wayne T

Looks like I can get 11 off of Avaya's website... Is the RAD anything in particular, like a drive of a certain size? How does it interface, USB, PATA....?

If you don't have the parts, I would just go for it. That being said, there is always the chance the system will default and you will lose all programing, I have done this many times with no problems. Any upgrades require a system shut down, so it is done all the time.
Are you running PRI? This could be a big problem if you don't have the key codes. (in case of default)
Also if for some reason the system "resets" and this usually only happens when you try to "downgrade", the system will change it's SN then the PRI key codes won't work anymore.

RAD is a unit sold through a vendor (or such) they interface through a station port.

Outside looking in.... a RAD sounds like basically a external Hard drive. Could I not connect serially and have it back up to the laptop's hard drive with the NRU? I know the ROM in the Nortel system isnt that big.

Sorry for all the noobish questions, but as far as the PRI, I doubt we have it. Small scale phone system, 5 outgoing/incoming lines and only 32 extensions. Physically, it appears that our phoen system is made up of the CP box, Nortel main phone/programming box, and things for paging....

Must have the RAD to interface. If it were me I would just do a power recycle, worst case you will have to reprogram. Other alternative would be to call a local vendor.

If the issue arises again, a power recycle will likely be the quick attempt at rectification. Is there a "correct" way to power down or the quick and dirty, unplug method?

That being said, any other idea along what could be failing if anything is?

Plug & unplug, as far as reasons, I would guess corruption and may require a start-up. That, being set to factory defaults.
A simple restart might fix all.
