Conflict with Foxprow2.5b and Internet Browser (IE5.0) 1

I use Foxprow2.5b on a 1.4Pentium PC with a 15" KDS Radius Thin-line Monitor. If I run Foxpro or my executable programs AFTER having accessed the Internet (connected to, or not, at that moment), the monitor freezes, the keyboard is non-responsive, and the PC will not shut down unless I disconnect the power at the the source (my NewPoint Power Director).

When the monitor freezes. The screen goes black with a few mixed colors across the top.

I have the monitor set at High Colors (16bit) at 800x600. I have tried a setting of 256 Colors without success.

Presently, If I intend to use Foxprow, I must reboot the PC if I have previously used the Internet browser. This does not happen with any other programs (Word, etc.)

Any suggestions?

Considering that FPW is a 16-bit app, and IE is a 32-bit app, the only thing they share is the operating system (WinME / Win2000?). I'd check to see if you can get updated video drivers, or see if the system builder has any known problems with running 16-bit apps.

Otherwise consider upgrading to VFP - I assume you aren't running Word 2.0.

I have had the exact same thing happen. I didn't correlate it to IE. I just thought my computer was acting goofy. But now thinking about it the error would only happen after I had been on my computer for awhile, so I most like had used IE - but when I would do a fresh boot and went straight into FoxPro all would be well.

Now that I think about it if I had IE running in the back ground and started FoxPro it did crash.

And it did exactly as you discribed. Screen goes black with some funky color splatter on the top of the screen and I had to unplug the computer.

The reason I speak in the past tense is because of the fact that I now use 98Lite which uninstalls IE from Win98. So I don't use IE anymore.

Would be nice to know what is causing this problem, for many people use IE on their computers.

Its funny how incompatible FoxPro (a MS product) is with other MS products (such as every MS OS since Win9x). You would think that they could be friends.

Brak,
It's often the opposite of your assumption. FoxPro and VFP have always conformed closely to the Windows specs, but many other applications (especially Office and IE), tend to exploit loopholes or "undefined" API calls that step on FoxPro. Remember that FP and VFP often push the PC to it's limits - especially in memory use, and other apps assume that the normally unused areas of memory are "free" to be used in non-standard ways!

I agree that it's really too bad that MS products can't get along better together under an MS OS!
