I purchased a new computer that came with a trial version of Office 2003. This version expired Saturday with no warning leaving much of the software disabled so I installed my Office XP Professional. This installation caused immediate conflict in my Outlook and I have been unable to get my .pst files since. I uninstalled both versions of Office and reinstalled my XP but still am unable to get XP, Outlook Express, or Mozilla Thunderbird to import or work with my pst files. I get MAPI profile error! I've just begun a new business and have critical data in these pst files. Any help will keep me from jumping.

do any profiles show up in control panel -> mail ?

if so delete these and then try.

I'm rather surprised that a computer that was so recently new came with a trial of Office 2003 rather than 2007. I'm also surprised that you were running a business, and saving critical data, using trial software. Anyway, Outlook 2003 pst files are not compatible with earlier versions. Off the top of my head I don't know of any converters for them.

The easiest thing would be if you knew someone who had Outlook 2003 who could copy all your mail into an earlier format pst. Alternatively you could try getting a trial version of Office 2007 and using that to do the same. If you do go for the 2007 trial you will find that Outlook doesn't get installed by default on systems with older versions of Outlook, but I'm afraid I can't remember all the details (I'm away from home without any access to any version of Outlook at the moment) of how to work round it.

Enjoy,
Tony

Yes, I was surprised too thinking that the upgrade would be 2007 not 2003, but not looking a gift horse in the mouth I used the software never worrying about my pst files as I've never had any problem with moving/importing/manipulating them in the past. Guess I'll just bite the bullet and buy the 2003 upgrade from the University where my husband works. Didn't want to spend the money as it doesn't come with Access, blah, blah, Microsoft, blah, blah I'll save it for my blog and remember that I've made my living teaching office apps for 20 years and it serves me right!
