Configuring secondary AD intergrated DNS Server 1

We're running an AD integrated DNS server, with the zone info stored in the AD. I wanted to make a secondary DNS server, but when I go to configure it on another box, the active directory integrated option isn't availible, and I only have the choice of standard primary or standard secondary.

What's the best practice for setting up a backup dns server in AD? Any advice?

Thanks

If you have another AD server, it would be the best secondary since it already is storing the DNS info in its AD database. If you want to set up a non-AD DC secondary, choose the 'standard secondary' type zone. You won't have any troubles.

So to summarize: the secondary can only mark a zone 'Active-Directory Integrated' if it is a DC. And that itself isn't actually true, since any AD-integrated zone automatically exists on every DC.

And:

You can create non-AD secondaries for AD-integrated zones.

Thanks! How would a non-ad integrated secondary get dns data if its being stored in the AD? I'm concerned that both servers won't have the exact same set of records.

When you choose to run Active Directory Integrated Zone, You have the added advantage of fault tolerance. Assuming that you are running more than one DC. The DNS database lives in the AD and is replicated to all DC's. If you must, you can setup a standard secondary zone on a member server (AD-integrated zones are only available on DC's) The secondary zone doesn't care where the database is replicated from (AD or Primary) It will hold a complete read only copy of the DNS database.
