I am needing to set up a workstation to run a vendor app. The machine is going to be running MSDE2000. The vendor says that I need to set up two raid sets(?). Pardon me, I'm a little fuzzy on this. They said:

2 x drives mirrored for the operating system
2 x drives mirrored for the datafiles

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P Dual MP DDR w/ a Promise ATA133 controller. It has 2 64-bit 66mhz pci slots and 2 32bit 33bit pci slots.

I would like to use SCSI drives if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd get two RAID controllers (1 for each array). Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S would be a good choice for the controllers. You'll most likely have to install the RAID adapter drivers by F6'ing shortly after running setup for the operating system. The RAID controllers will have a BIOS configuration utility where you can setup each array. If it's affordable and the vendor agrees I would personally use a mirrored (RAID-1) array for the operating system, and a striped (RAID-5) array for the data, but that's just a personal preference. RAID-5 would require at least 3, instead of 2 drives. hope this helps...

Well, the Boss choked on the price. What if I got a couple of SATA cards? I saw an Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA card and it supports RAID 1 which is what my vendor recommends. Is SATA as good and reliable as SCSI?

Get a ASUS P4P800 deluxe motherboard. It comes with built in Raid controllers, either ATA or SATA. It cost about $120.

Is the Promise controller a RAID controller?
