Ok, I'm going to be connecting two PC's to eachother, both running XP. I will be doing it with a crossover cable for now, and a router in the very near future.

Once I connect them, what else do I have to do? I know about the files and settings transfer wizard, but how can I set them up so I can just drag and drop files?

Obviously there not just going to see eachother automatically, I'm going to have to do some configuration, I just don't know what.

And once I do have them configured, will I be able to open up "My Network Places" and I will see the other computer in there?

Once you have the NICs installed correctly and both computers on, you will have to run the network wizard in Network Connections.
Go to Control Panel, Network Connections, then set up a home or small office network. Just follow the instructions given. You will have to do this on both comps your networking.

Once the wizard has been setup successfully, go back to network connections. You should see your new conenction there. Right click on it then properties. Under the general tab, make sure you have the neccessary services and protocols installed. File print sharing/TCP/IP etc

Once all this is fine, open up my network places. Use the wizard add a new network place to share folders etc.., just make sure the folder/s you want to share are set to share.

If you have Norton Internet Security/AV this may cause you comps not to see each other and you'll be unable to share folders etc. You will have to change the settings for the firewall.

Someone feel free to correct if I've mucked up anywhere! :)
