Sorry but I did not see an entry under the Communications Rack for LinkSys, but I know somebody out knows the answer to my problem in this area.

I have to install a LinkSys router BEFSR41(4 port) to an existing DSL/cable modem from Cox cable.

This system will serve as the backup to the existing network should we lose service with MCI’s T1. Currently we have a CISCO 2600 router, PIX 501 firewall, and a twenty four-port hub. Everything works great; I have an AS400, NT 4.0 server, and Internet service for 18 users. I do know the CISCO router does not have the required card for the cable/DSL modem and so instead of buying the required card we now have a cable modem and a four port BEFSR41 router and one IP address from the cable company.

My question is: Is it possible to control which system (NT or AS400) FTP requests are routed to. We have several outside warehouses that sign onto our AS400 or the NT 4.0 box to put or get data files from or to their systems.

I know the best solution would be the CISCO routers but there are other reasons this needs to happen as planned. I can purchase additional IP addresses from Cox if I need them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is no easy answer to what you want to do. If your T1 goes down, the address space (i.e. IP range) assigned to that T-1 goes down with it. It cannot be rerouted to your DSL (you mentioned having a cable modem though. If it is cable, why aren't you using an ethernet interface on the router?) without running something like BGP. Since DSL/cable is a switched technology, it is possible to run BGP on it, but it is very difficult and most ISPs won't do it. It is a pain in the A**. Assuming you get a static from COX, you may be able to make a failover FTP server depending on the application you are using. Similar to a failover VPN server. There are other possabilities, but they get to be expensive.

Question:
Do you feel the Linksys router is as secure as your PIX?

If you answer yes - *staring at you with a bewildered look*
If you answer no - What is the point of having a PIX firewall if you gave a hacker an easy way to circumvent it?

It is what it is!!
