Hi I have a client with offices on the west coast and on the east coast. They share a single domain name but have two Exchange servers. The MX record is configured to send mail to the east coast first and then to the west coast.

My qurestion is this; Is there anything special I have to do to get this configuration working. I have AD replicating DNS and both servers can send and receive mail. Currently mail is coming in to the east coast and being routed to the west coast. Is there anything I am missing here?

So what was the problem? In your description, it seems that everything is working?

Everything is working, but I just want to ensure that this is how to properly configure things and that I wasn't missing anything.

It all looks right to me. AD will keep track of which server is holding each users mailbox and route the mail accordingly.

Yes it seems to work properly in theory, but it also creates a lot of traffic, work and time. You also could considering splitting the company domain in subdomains like eastcoast.organisation.com and westcoast.organisation.com or something.

In this way every single office get its own mail and reduces the traffic that is genarated. Sync with offices in a WAN takes a lot of traffic, work and time when you ajust configurations. Next to that you will allways depend on working hours and time differences of all offices in the WAN.

A trust in local or subdomains can often be sufficient for a small WAN.
