Hello. I have a Compaq Presario 7222 that I recently upgraded to Windows 98SE. I installed an extra 16 mb of RAM first and then put on 98 (this was a clean install [I formatted the hard drive first]). I got through the installation but when I started it up for the first time I got the message "While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." I read the Microsoft knowledge base article about this problem and attempted to fix it by booting into safe mode and going to Device Manager > System Devices > Advanced Power Management Support Properties> Settings > and then putting a check mark in Force APM 1.0. This didn't help. I also tried to get into the BIOS to disable the L2 cache. Problem is when trying to get into the BIOS in this computer it brings up a Compaq Diagnostic program that you are suppose to use to edit CMOS information and other things like that. Well when I select Computer Setup from the menu, the screen changes to a message box saying its retrieving information and then it just hangs there. I can't move the mouse and nothing happens. I tried calling Compaq but they want $40 because the PC is out of warranty. I have gotten into safe mode and searched for CONFIGMG.vxd and there is nothing. So I took a copy from the Win98 CD and placed it into \Windows\System. I still get the error though. I searched through Win.ini, system.ini, and other such files and there is no reference to CONFIGMG. I then searched through the registry and have found quite a few references to CONFIGMG but nothing that looks unusual. If anybody has any advice about what I can do to fix this problem please let me know! Thanks for your time.

Remove the new ram stick you installed and see if the problem goes away. I've seen bad ram cause that CONFIGMG error. If it does return that ram back and get your money back.

If I remove the new RAM, I'll only have 8mb which is not enough for Windows 98 to install. I tried removing the new RAM anyway and tried to install Windows 95 which is what was on there before. It gets through most of the install but when it reboots to start up for the first time I get "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer"

Mspain already saw that article reghakr. Mspain, it may very well be that all your ram is bad. Bad ram can cause windows protection errors. I would suggest that you take the 16mb stick back and get a 64mb stick of ram and use just that and then try the install. Win98 can install with less than 64mb but in my experience it needs at least 64mb to run well.
