computer won't start 1

ok here is the run down... have a computer new mother board ram and graphics card.. has ran for over three months now. left if on by accident and went to work ( yeah i was late) i come home and the computer is off.. won't start up.. has power to the mother board... when you hit the power the fans stuter slightly like they want to spin but just don't.. help please

My first guess is power supply. Try a new one. You might be able to take your old one to a PC shop. They should be able to tell you if it at least powers up. It is possible that the issue is something else in your system, but I would start here!

If your Power supply is fine, unplug keyboard, mouse, CD, HDD, Floppy, and all your cards. Try again. If fans spin, power off, plug in one thing, try again. Keep going until it fails again, and the last thing you plugged in is the problem.

If that did not help, then look at MB, CPU, RAM, or possible short points. I have seen many systems that run fine for a time, but eventually begin to short out (due to heat expansion slowly shifting things around). Usually that happens between the motherboard and case/standoffs.

I have seen many, many systems that will do what you describe, only to work if you unplug the power from the power supply for 10 minutes--and then fail again later. If this is happening consistantly to yours, then it is almost guarenteed that the issue is Power supply or Motherboard.

Sorry for the rambling--just post back with results of what you try and we'll go from there! Mudskipper

I had the exact same problem. The problem is the power supply. Mine would also studder like that and the light on the motherboard would still be on showing that there is power, but even then, I found out it was my power supply.

Just do not buy a foxxcon or deer powersupply. They can blow components when they die. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

hey thanks for the great tips... first off i tried un pluging everything looking for what might have caused it... still nothing.. no fans move nothing at all. like i said the light on the mother board is on stating it gets power.. but still nothing... going out in a few days to buy a new power supply and going to try that... if that doesn't work im at a loss

well so here is a small update please if you could help further... i borrowed a powersupply from a friend till the one i get from the ups man comes today... so i plug it in and only put power from the power supply to the board and the hard drive.. now the problum here is when it starts up i do not go anywhere.. it loads to the motherboards splash screen. can't go into bios.. can't do nothing. help me please

I know that this is a bit of a pain, but I would bread board the system. OR you might try to clear cmos first.

To do this, take the motherboard (with CPU & RAM) out of the case. Place it on something that is not conductive. Hook up a video card, keyboard, and power supply. Now use something conductive (like the tip of a screwdriver) and carefully short out the power on pins on the motherboard.

Same results? Then clear CMOS, try again. After that, start replacing video care, ram, cpu, MB one at a time until it works.

If, after breadboarding it, you get it to POST, then--
-look carefully at your motherboard standoffs in the case, ensure that they are mounted correctly (no extras, etc)
-hook the motherboard back into the case, hook up vid, key, power on.
-if it still works, then hook up one thing, try it
-plug one more thing it, try it (etc, etc, etc)

well i got the powersupply in and hooked it all up... oh the computer started up.. it went into post and all is now well.. happily working once again... i thank you greatly for your help
