Were there any error messages?
Did it happen more than once?
Was there any new software or hardware installed prior to the shutdown? Any new downloads?
Did it restart ok? Any error messages? Did it automatically run Scandisk on start-up?
Did Word save (recover) the document?
Brevity is nice ... but a little more info would be helpful. JMikl K

It started sometime after the printer driver was installed. It had to be downloaded from the net. There were no messages to my knowledge. It has don't it about four times today. After reboot it is fine until it happens again.
if there is any message when it shuts down copy it before shutting the computer off and re-booting. I assume the Word program shuts down - does it disappear?
Does the computer shut itself off entirely?
Is it a BSOD you see?
Does it run Scandisk on re-start?
What kind of a printer? Is the downloaded driver the exact choice for the printer? Whose is it, manufacturer?
If it's an incompatibility between the printer driver and Word you can expect you are not the only one having a problem. MS WORD may have a patch, and/or/ the printer website may have a patch.
I wish i could point you right to where to go on MS Word site looking for a patch, but all i can do is suggest that, from what you've described, there should be one, and the printer mfgr website is as good a bet as the MS site. JMikl K
