hello...
i recently built a computer..everything works fine but for a small problem--> When the machine is shut down and i start it by pressing the Power button, it starts, the fans do their work, all of my LED lights turn on but I can't hear "The Beep"...and as a result my monitor won't turn on..there's that dull orange light on it...BUT...if i press the Reset button for about 10 secs AFTER i power up, i can hear "The Beep" and up comes my bios after which i can get to the wonderful world of computing...i've been doing this routine for about a month now and am tired of it..does anybody know what i might be doing wrong? i've tried to connect the wire from my case to the motherboard in all possible angles but the problem persists...i would greatly appreciate it if somebody can help me out...

This is a strange one, so I"ll give some strange guesses.

Maybe, the power button gets stuck. Maybe the front of the case isn't on quite tight enough, so the power button doesn't realease, like, pop out far enough.

I know you tried this, but simply switch the wires from the power button and reset button. I know you tried it, but get it to work how it is now, then just swap the power and reset wires on the MB.

Actually, my system does this too, most of the time. It only started when I overclocked the duron. I'm running a Via KT333, and I have a friend who's running a KT266 and OCing and it does the same thing to him. We always figured it had something to do with the overclocking, and I can't say I've worked at all to fix it, as my computer doesn't get turned off that much. I'd be very interrested to hear of a solution to this, though. What are your system specs? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...but I'm just a C man trying to see the light

tried that (switching wires between the power and reset buttons)already MinnisotaFreezing...doesn't work... thanks though..i tried to tighten (press on) the front case panel while pressing on the power button...still nothing...
my system specs goes like this icrf...1.7ghz celeron in a socket 478 m/b from Soyo...533 fsb i think...512 ddr ...geforce 2 ti xtasy graphics card...that's about it..

Haven't traced down ATX signals but suspect that you have a comparable problem to AT systems that run really fast. The power supply has a power good signal that comes up pretty much at the same time as +5 but not at the exact same time. So the processor gets clocked and gets into the BIOS and into the power checking part before the power good signal is ready and the BIOS locks the system up. The signal finally comes up and the restart of the BIOS by the reset switch finds everything OK.
I lived with the problem for about 2 years until I finally decided enough was enough and swapped out the power supply. Ed Fair

I see many stars in your future, Ed. (call me Swami!)
Thanks

i guess i'll change my psu and see what's up...since that is the one thing i haven't done...i have 350w right now..should i go for more watts or less? what do you suggest ed? thanks for your tip..

You're running more computer than I've ever seen so I'm not the one to ask. That said, more is better, less is trouble. Or to restate it in real terms, your system can't use power it doesn't have. But 350 is probably ample. Ed Fair

Good catch Ed....

400w p/s is the bare minimum I use/recommend anymore. The newer generation of display adapters, memory, and other peripherals require so much more power. It's not like the old days when I ran a compaq on 145w, and was wondering what to do with all that power!

Hey, I still have systems with 65.
One fast (or nearly fast) test is to pull the hard drives and CDs and try power up test a dozen or so times with a minute or so between tests. The power supply is under more load as things are coming up to speed and may not be regulating fast enough.
If it boots 12 for 12 with no drives and less than 12 for 12 with drives it is probably power related. Well, not boot , but to boot error.
