Computer Slows Down

I am working on a Gateway Computer that is about 1 1/2 Years old, it is a 2.9 Ghz with 512 Mb RAM and Windows XP. The problem I am having is that the computer will slow down every once in awhile it veries in which program you are on wheather it is network or local/internet or non internet. I have ran both Trend Micro and Symantec's online anti virus programs and neither found anything and I have ran spysweeper, Ewido & Spybot Search and Destroy and have removed the very few items that they have found. I just can't seem to put my finger on anyone thing that is causing the slowdown. ANY IDEAS?

When it slows down, look in Task Manager to see what is using the CPU. This kind of thing happens here all the time and 9 times out of 10 it's the antivirus either updateing or running a scan on incoming/outgoing files.

I don't see anything in your HiJackthis log that indicates something suspicious. However I do see a slowdown culprit. Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (what Advantage, more like Spyware) tool will cause a lot of speed drop when it is running. This is patch 905474, and is loaded resident in memory upon startup:

Patch 905474 is bad news, anyway, so it's best to just get rid of it. Below is a link to a remover for it.

Might be a dumb question, but have you defragmented your computer? Also, you could get some more memory (I know that it doesn't explain why it's slowing down, but it sure could help).

Do you have any unused network adapters that you can just Disable, not uninstall?

Maybe your machine is just getting tired and is in need of a Format and rebuild of XP?
