Hey Everyone. I work from home, in Chicago, so I have no air conditioning, just a big fan. My room is usually 70 to 80 degrees F, and lately my computer when running high graphics games or video editing programs, it will shut down on it's own. Nothing else attached to the Power Strip is shutting down, and I've switched the power cord and it's still doing it. Is this due to overheating? Any ideas? Thanks.

Could be overheating. If your computer has a monitor in bios or you have software that will check the temperature you can see what it is after you reboot the computer. you might try running with the case open and a fan blowing into the case to see if that helps.

Would just buying another fan for the cpu work, you think?

You should be able to add a case fan, they're very cheap and should help especially if other componants such as the video card contribute to your heat problem. Your case likely has space for one built in.

The only other possibility is a dodgy power supply but given the temperature, I'm betting it's the heat. Also, if your processor is an AMD, it's likely throwing off more heat than an Intel.

Not until you find out if that's your problem. Too many people will forgo the testing phase and jump right into "fixing" things. I've seen so many posts here with statements like: My sound card stopped working so I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows. When that didn't work I flashed the BIOS. It still doesn't work.
(Sorry for the soapbox moment)

Of course - Franklin already covered the testing process so my post was a solution following up a diagnosis.

Ampersander my comment was to Gashtelon's question about adding a fan not yours. I try not to go counter to people trying to help. [smile]
