Hello, I'm gonna get straight to the point...
My computer either shuts down or restarts just out of nowhere...This all started about 4 months ago, right after we had a D.U.I. crash into my mom's office in a SUV, on the other side of the wall from where my comp is. Anybody would have been killed or seriously hurt, had they been in that room... Anyways, my computer was not on at the time, but I swear a bad surge or something must have tampered with my comp (I have average surge protector for plug-ins), because the cable modem & router were in that room too. The cable modem was fine (dunno how), but the
router was CRUSHED. The room was also really wet because the heaters use hot water.
My Ethernet card is intergrated, and no longer works after that night. Now this all may be coincidental, but I'm skeptical on that part... Problems were annoying but minimal (gradually getting worse) for about 2 months. Then it started getting BAD...anytime from as soon as it got to desktop, to 5 min or 5 hours, it would either shut down (with power light still on), or restart. Most the time it seemed to restart more, but it don't seem to matter now.
But here's the tricky part, get this... The damn thing ran great as long as a game was running! Not once did it do anything while in a game, whether it be simple ol' Alpha Centuri, or power suckin C&C Generals, Quake 3, ect. I used to run Alpha Centuri and Alt-Tab it, just so I could mess around in desktop and do things I wanted to do. I couldn't (and still don't) understand it! So one day I just stopped using the comp, just because I was being stubborn about the fact that if it wasn't gonna stay working without running a game, I wasn't gonna use it at all (or at least until I got money put together)...
About a little less then a month layter, I was rearranging my room and moved everything around a bit (including comp). I was happy with new look of the room and gazed at my newly arranged, clean comp-desk. I was itching to turn it on so I did. Everything loaded fine, but I wasn't gonna get my hopes up just yet, so I went in the livin-room to see what was on the tely (vision). I come back after a couple hours to find that it is still running strong. So I'm all stoked about it and end up staying up for 2 days doing stuff on it, running clean as a whistle, I finally shut her down for the night. To my amazement this goes on for almost a month, runnin the internet (through USB) and everything I could think of!
...Untill one morning I turn it on and I have a mess of serious problems, that I got off the net. My computer was sick, I did all I could to remove whatever infection I had gotten, but I realized I couldn't fix it. So I re-installed Windows 2000 Pro (without Service Packs this time), went very smoothly, and then a few hours layter I find that my comp is off (power liht still on). This happens a couple more times within the next day, but then early this mornin I started it up and AS SOON as the screen was about to switch to the desktop it would restart...this happens several times in a row, even shuts down a couple times, so I try it one last time and it runs fine as I type this very sentance. It's been fine for hours now.
† SPECS †
Power Supply - PowMax ATX 400w Model No. LP-8800D
Mobo - nVidia Biostar M7NCD 400mh FSB Version N1.13B.1R
CPU - x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 AMD XP 2600+
HDD - Maxtor 80gig Model 6Y080L0
RAM (not sure what brand or anything) - Total Physical Memory: 523,764 KB
VidCard - AGP 8x nVidia GeForce FX 5600 BFG Asylum 256mb Driver 77.72
Cable Modem - Motorola SURFboard SB5100
OS - Windows 2000 Pro (no service packs) With DirectX 9.0c
One interesting note is, I can tell when it wants/attempts to shutdown/restart, cause it will make a strange sound, somewhat like a faint tick. I'm not yet sure where it comes from as it is quite unpredictable and patternless. The last failed attempt to load to desktop, it ticked 3 times in a row like, tick..tick...tick...tick (last one shutdown)...That however was a first...Now that I think about it, it makes that faint tick as soon as the comp turns off, normally or not.
† Summary †
There you have it, I'm sorry if this was a long post but I just wanted to be as detailed as possible, because I absolutely NEED to find out whether it's my Mobo, Power Supply, or somethin else. I truely appreciate all ya'll's time and effort to help me figuer this DEMON out, cause it sure is hell.
P.S.
I'll try to stay in check with the forum, but it's up to my computer on whether or not it wants to run...
